Care Home Fire Safety — HIQA Requirements

Care homes in Ireland are regulated by HIQA and must comply with the HIQA National Standards for Residential Care Settings for Older People. Fire safety is a key area of HIQA inspection. Requirements include:

  • A current fire risk assessment — legally required and HIQA inspected
  • An IS 3218 compliant fire alarm system — annually serviced
  • Adequate fire extinguisher provision to IS 291
  • IS 3217 compliant emergency lighting — including standby lighting
  • PAT testing of all portable electrical appliances
  • Fire safety training for all staff — documented
  • Regular fire evacuation drills — documented and HIQA reviewed
  • Written fire safety management plan

PAT Testing for Care Homes

HIQA requires that all portable electrical appliances in care homes are regularly PAT tested. This includes medical and non-medical equipment — hoists, electric beds, televisions, kettles, computers and all other portable electrical items used by residents and staff.

RFC provides PAT testing for care homes across Dublin and Leinster — same day HIQA-ready compliance certificates issued. All work carried out by Gardaí vetted engineers with minimal disruption to residents. RFC is the only Dublin fire and security company offering this service.

Fire Risk Assessment for Care Homes

A fire risk assessment is a legal requirement for all care homes and a key area of HIQA inspection. The FRA must identify all fire hazards specific to the care home environment — including the presence of vulnerable residents who may require assistance to evacuate.

RFC's professionally conducted fire risk assessments for care homes are provided in a detailed written format, ready for HIQA inspection. RFC is the only Dublin fire and security company offering this service.
