Dry powder fire extinguishers — identified by their blue label — are the most versatile type in terms of fire class coverage, effective on Class A, B and C fires as well as electrical fires. However, dry powder extinguishers are not recommended for use in offices or enclosed indoor spaces — the powder causes significant damage to equipment and dramatically reduces visibility, making evacuation more difficult.

Dry powder extinguishers are best suited to outdoor environments, garages, plant rooms, industrial premises and vehicle-mounted use where their fire class versatility outweighs the limitations of powder residue.

⚠️ Not recommended for office or indoor use. Dry powder causes significant damage to electrical equipment and dramatically reduces visibility. Foam or CO2 are preferred for indoor commercial environments.

How Does a Dry Powder Extinguisher Work?

Dry powder extinguishers work by discharging a jet of fine dry chemical powder that interferes with the chemical chain reaction of combustion, effectively smothering the fire. The powder forms a crust over burning materials, cutting off the oxygen supply and preventing re-ignition.

While effective on multiple fire classes, dry powder leaves a significant residue that is difficult to clean and can cause corrosion of electrical equipment. For this reason, dry powder is not recommended in offices, server rooms or any environment with sensitive equipment.

Dry Powder Extinguisher Sizes Available

  • 1kg — vehicle-mounted use
  • 2kg — small plant rooms, vehicles
  • 6kg — most common commercial size
  • 9kg — industrial and large premises
  • Trolley-mounted — high-risk industrial environments
