The 6 Types of Fire Extinguisher

In Ireland, there are six main types of fire extinguisher used in commercial premises — each designed for a specific class of fire. Choosing the wrong type of extinguisher can be ineffective or even dangerous. This guide explains each type, the class of fire it is designed for and where it should be used.

🔴
Red
Water
Class A Fires

Water extinguishers are the most common type. They work by cooling the burning material below its ignition temperature.

  • Wood, paper and cardboard
  • Textiles and fabrics
  • Offices and retail premises
  • Schools and educational buildings
⚠️ Never use on electrical fires, flammable liquids or cooking oils.
🟠
Cream
Foam (AFFF)
Class A & B Fires

Foam extinguishers work on both Class A and Class B fires — making them the most versatile general purpose extinguisher for commercial premises.

  • Ordinary combustibles (Class A)
  • Flammable liquids — petrol, paint, solvents
  • Most commercial and retail premises
  • Warehouses and storage facilities
⚠️ Never use on electrical fires or cooking oil fires.
Black
CO2
Class B & Electrical Fires

CO2 extinguishers are essential for offices, server rooms and any premises with significant electrical equipment. They leave no residue and do not damage electrical equipment.

  • Electrical fires — computers, servers
  • Offices and server rooms
  • Flammable liquid fires (Class B)
  • Data centres and control rooms
⚠️ Not suitable for Class A fires or cooking oil fires. Never use in a confined space without ventilation.
🔵
Blue
Dry Powder
Class A, B & C Fires

Dry powder extinguishers are multi-purpose and effective on Class A, B and C fires. They are particularly suitable for outdoor use and in areas with flammable gases.

  • Flammable gases — Class C fires
  • Garages and plant rooms
  • Outdoor and industrial environments
  • Vehicles and machinery
⚠️ Not recommended for offices or indoor use — powder causes damage and reduces visibility. Not suitable for cooking oil fires.
🟡
Yellow
Wet Chemical
Class F Fires (Cooking Oil)

Wet chemical extinguishers are specifically designed for Class F fires — cooking oils and fats. They are a legal requirement in commercial kitchens in Ireland.

  • Commercial kitchens — hotels, restaurants
  • Chip fryers and deep fat fryers
  • Cooking oil and fat fires
  • Any premises with commercial cooking
⚠️ Specifically for cooking oil fires. Required in all commercial kitchens under Irish fire safety regulations.
White
Water Mist
Class A, B, C & Electrical

Water mist extinguishers are a modern multi-purpose option suitable for most fire classes including electrical fires. Environmentally friendly — no chemicals.

  • Modern offices and commercial premises
  • Healthcare environments
  • Electrical fires — safe to use
  • Where chemical residue must be avoided
⚠️ Not suitable for cooking oil fires (Class F). Higher cost than traditional extinguishers.

Which Fire Extinguisher Does My Business Need?

The types and quantities of fire extinguisher required for your commercial premises depend on several factors:

  • The size and layout of your premises
  • The nature of the fire risks present — what materials are stored or used
  • The presence of commercial cooking equipment
  • The amount and type of electrical equipment on the premises
  • The number of floors and the layout of escape routes
  • The findings of your fire risk assessment

RFC's engineers carry out a full assessment of your premises and recommend the correct type and quantity of extinguishers — ensuring you are fully compliant with Irish Standard IS 291 and the Fire Services Act.

Fire Extinguisher Colour Codes in Ireland

In Ireland, fire extinguishers are colour coded to identify the type of extinguishing agent. The body of the extinguisher is red — with a coloured band or panel indicating the type.

  • Red band — Water extinguisher
  • Cream / orange band — Foam extinguisher
  • Black band — CO2 extinguisher
  • Blue band — Dry powder extinguisher
  • Yellow band — Wet chemical extinguisher
  • White / grey band — Water mist extinguisher
