Disabled Refuge Systems Dublin
RFC install disabled refuge alarm systems for commercial premises across
Dublin and Leinster. Legally required in multi-storey buildings. BS 5839
and IS 3217 compliant. Free site survey. Same day compliance certificate.
Legal Requirement — Multi-Storey Commercial Buildings
Disabled refuge systems are legally required in all multi-storey commercial
buildings under Irish Building Regulations Part M and the Disability Act 2005.
All systems must comply with BS 5839 Part 9.
A disabled refuge system provides a two-way voice communication link between
a refuge point — a protected area where a person with mobility difficulties
can wait safely during evacuation — and the building's fire control point or
reception. RFC install BS 5839 compliant disabled refuge systems for
commercial premises across Dublin and Leinster.
🔔
Alarm Activates
Fire alarm activates. Person with mobility difficulties proceeds to the nearest refuge point and presses the call button.
🎙
Two-Way Comms
Refuge unit establishes two-way voice communication with the fire control panel at reception or the designated control point.
✅
Rescue Dispatched
Fire warden or emergency services are alerted to the exact location of the person waiting at the refuge point for evacuation assistance.
Under Irish Building Regulations Part M and BS 5839 Part 9, disabled refuge systems are required in:
All multi-storey commercial buildings with more than one floor above or below ground level
Hotels — stairwells and lift lobbies on all floors
Office buildings — all floors above ground floor
Schools — multi-storey buildings
Hospitals and care homes — all areas accessible to residents and patients
Shopping centres and retail premises — upper floors
Any building to which the public has access with more than one floor
What a Disabled Refuge System Includes
Refuge call points at all designated refuge areas — typically stairwell landing areas
Master control unit at the fire control point or reception
Two-way voice communication between refuge points and control unit
Visual indicators at refuge points and control unit
Battery backup — system remains operational during power failure
Integration with building fire alarm system
BS 5839 Part 9 compliant signage at all refuge points
Annual Testing & Servicing
Under BS 5839 Part 9, disabled refuge systems must be tested and serviced
annually by a competent person. RFC carry out annual testing and servicing
for all disabled refuge systems and issue a compliance certificate on the
same day. Monthly functional testing is also recommended and can be carried
out by a nominated person on your premises following RFC's handover training.
