Where Are Disabled Refuge Systems Required?

Under Irish Building Regulations Part M and BS 5839 Part 9, disabled refuge systems are required in:

  • All multi-storey commercial buildings with more than one floor above or below ground level
  • Hotels — stairwells and lift lobbies on all floors
  • Office buildings — all floors above ground floor
  • Schools — multi-storey buildings

Annual Testing & Servicing

Under BS 5839 Part 9, disabled refuge systems must be tested and serviced annually by a competent person. Monthly functional testing is also recommended and can be carried out by a nominated person on your premises following RFC's handover training.
