CO2 (carbon dioxide) fire extinguishers — identified by their black label
— are essential for any commercial premises with significant electrical
equipment. CO2 extinguishers work by displacing oxygen around the fire,
starving it of the oxygen it needs to burn. Unlike foam or water, CO2
leaves no residue — making it ideal for use on computers, servers,
switchboards and other valuable electrical equipment.
Under IS 291, all commercial premises with electrical equipment should
have CO2 extinguishers available. RFC supply, install and service CO2
extinguishers for all commercial premises across Dublin and Leinster.

⚠️
Important Safety Note
CO2 extinguishers must never be used in confined spaces without adequate ventilation.
CO2 displaces oxygen and can cause asphyxiation in enclosed areas. RFC engineers
advise on safe placement as part of every installation survey.
CO2 extinguishers work by releasing a high-pressure jet of carbon dioxide gas
that displaces the oxygen around the fire. Without oxygen, the fire cannot
sustain combustion and is extinguished. CO2 is a non-conductive gas — making
it completely safe to use on live electrical equipment.
Unlike foam or powder extinguishers, CO2 leaves no residue after use.
This means that electrical equipment can often be restored to service
after a CO2 discharge without the need for cleaning or replacement —
making CO2 the preferred choice for offices, server rooms and data centres.
CO2 Extinguisher Sizes Available
RFC supply CO2 extinguishers in a range of sizes for commercial premises:
1kg CO2 — small offices, reception areas
2kg CO2 — standard office and retail use
5kg CO2 — server rooms, large offices, industrial
Trolley-mounted CO2 — data centres, large electrical installations
CO2 Extinguisher — Annual Servicing
Under IS 291, CO2 extinguishers must be annually serviced and their weight
checked to confirm the correct CO2 charge level. CO2 extinguishers also
require a full discharge and recharge test every 5 years. RFC carry out
all required servicing and issue IS 291 compliance certificates.
