Families spend hundreds of euros each year on home and contents insurance, but it is also imperative to take the proper care to protect your home with simple safety procedures. Fire prevention is a key element of home safety. Today, AISM share some of the easy steps you can take to ensure you and your family are safe from what can be a devastating event.
Smoke alarms are the fastest and most accurate fire detection devices. Make sure you have at least one smoke detector on each floor of your house and one outside the door of each bedroom.
Ensure the smoke alarms you buy are manufactured to all current quality standards and regulations. You should test your detectors once every month and change the batteries twice a year to ensure fire prevention.
Stoves, dryers and boilers are common accidental fire starters. Bring in a professional once a year to service your appliances and ensure they are in proper working order.
Try to avoid charging multiple computers, phones, cameras or other rechargeable devices on the same power sockets. Cables can easily become tangled and are electrical fire hazards. Extension leads and power strips also contribute to this danger and using too many can overload your outlets, so be conscious of how many devices you are plugging in at the one time. Be wary of cheaper charging devices too as they may overheat quickly. Never leave a phone charging under a pillow.
Dry recycling can be a powerful fire accelerator. Ensure that you throw away items such as old newspapers and cardboard boxes, and other types of packaging, regularly. Keep entryways clear of clutter so that you won't have obstacles in the event of a fire.
In the event of a fire occurring, it is very wise to have fire safety equipment in your home such as fire extinguishers and fire blankets. These should be kept within a close distance of fire hazards such as the cooker. If you have a fire extinguisher, it must be tested regularly, and you should ensure that you know how to use it properly.
AISM can advise you on the most appropriate fire prevention equipment for your home.
“We moved our security requirements (CCTV, Fire & Intruder alarms and Key Holding) to AISM about 4 years ago. The service is excellent. We never have to contact them to schedule regular maintenance calls, the engineers just arrive when they are supposed to. Their Emergency and after-hours service is good. You are never left waiting too long if your alarm won’t set for any reason. I would have no hesitation in recommending them.”

“On the 22nd/23rd Oct last at 3.30am I received a phone call. It was the alarm company. Intruder alarm has been triggered. Gardai have been alerted and will meet with your key holder. In years gone by that key holder was me. I had to drag myself out of bed, get dressed and go to work in the middle of the night and hope the Gardai were still there. If not, I always felt very vulnerable while I waited for them. I never risked entering the premises on my own. When everything was checked, I’d have to return home, often with the premises left with no alarm because of damage. Then get up the following morning as usual and face a day of tidying, dealing with contractors and insurers etc. etc. This time my key holder was provided by the security company. He met the Gardai, let them gain access, check that the intruders had fled and then stayed on guard outside until I showed up for work. An essential service provided by AISM and worth every penny. Security is peace of mind.”
