The weather gods are finally smiling on Ireland, and we have had a few days of perfect sunshine. The weekend has been spent at the beach, in the park or in the back garden having a BBQ. Getting family and friends together for an afternoon of delicious BBQ burgers, steaks and veggies is many people's idea of the perfect weekend.
If this beautiful weather continues, there's no doubt that you will be dusting off your own grill, but it is so important to remember the risks that can be involved in firing up the BBQ. This week we are sharing our top BBQ fire safety tips to ensure you and your family are safe this summer.
This is one of the most important BBQ fire safety tips. Keep the BBQ as far away as possible from any structure, including the house, garages and sheds. It is also important to keep it away from coverings such as canopies, umbrellas and marquees.
It's been sunny all day, but as soon as you're ready to start cooking the rain drops start to fall. Some people think it will be safe to use a BBQ, even a small one, indoors. This is an absolute no-no. It is a tremendous fire hazard, and the grills release carbon monoxide. This deadly gas needs to be vented by fresh air in order to keep you and your family safe. Following from this, if you are using a gas/propane BBQ, do not turn on the gas while the lid of the unit is closed. It can cause a serious build-up of gas and could cause an explosion when lit.
Grease and fat build up over use, and can add fuel to a fire. Ensure you clean out the BBQ and all equipment thoroughly before use.
Get all of your food prep done in advance, and assign one person to be in charge solely of the grilling. Never leave the BBQ unattended when there are children and animals around.
Ensure you have a full fire extinguisher that meets current standards within reach, and know how to use it. If a fire hazard occurs, and you're not sure how to use it, call 999 immediately. Even with our BBQ fire safety tips, there are many fire hazards that occur throughout the home. AISM are the leading suppliers of fire extinguishers and other fire safety equipment in Ireland. “We moved our security requirements (CCTV, Fire & Intruder alarms and Key Holding) to AISM about 4 years ago. The service is excellent. We never have to contact them to schedule regular maintenance calls, the engineers just arrive when they are supposed to. Their Emergency and after-hours service is good. You are never left waiting too long if your alarm won’t set for any reason. I would have no hesitation in recommending them.”

“On the 22nd/23rd Oct last at 3.30am I received a phone call. It was the alarm company. Intruder alarm has been triggered. Gardai have been alerted and will meet with your key holder. In years gone by that key holder was me. I had to drag myself out of bed, get dressed and go to work in the middle of the night and hope the Gardai were still there. If not, I always felt very vulnerable while I waited for them. I never risked entering the premises on my own. When everything was checked, I’d have to return home, often with the premises left with no alarm because of damage. Then get up the following morning as usual and face a day of tidying, dealing with contractors and insurers etc. etc. This time my key holder was provided by the security company. He met the Gardai, let them gain access, check that the intruders had fled and then stayed on guard outside until I showed up for work. An essential service provided by AISM and worth every penny. Security is peace of mind.”
