BBQ Fire Safety Tips from AISM Services

The weather gods are finally smiling on Ireland, and we have had a few days of perfect sunshine. The weekend has been spent at the beach, in the park or in the back garden having a BBQ. Getting family and friends together for an afternoon of delicious BBQ burgers, steaks and veggies is many people's idea of the perfect weekend.

If this beautiful weather continues, there's no doubt that you will be dusting off your own grill, but it is so important to remember the risks that can be involved in firing up the BBQ. This week we are sharing our top BBQ fire safety tips to ensure you and your family are safe this summer.

Keep your BBQ at least 10 feet away from your house

This is one of the most important BBQ fire safety tips. Keep the BBQ as far away as possible from any structure, including the house, garages and sheds. It is also important to keep it away from coverings such as canopies, umbrellas and marquees.

Never use a BBQ indoors

It's been sunny all day, but as soon as you're ready to start cooking the rain drops start to fall. Some people think it will be safe to use a BBQ, even a small one, indoors. This is an absolute no-no. It is a tremendous fire hazard, and the grills release carbon monoxide. This deadly gas needs to be vented by fresh air in order to keep you and your family safe. Following from this, if you are using a gas/propane BBQ, do not turn on the gas while the lid of the unit is closed. It can cause a serious build-up of gas and could cause an explosion when lit.

Clean your BBQ

Grease and fat build up over use, and can add fuel to a fire. Ensure you clean out the BBQ and all equipment thoroughly before use.

Never leave a grill unattended

Get all of your food prep done in advance, and assign one person to be in charge solely of the grilling. Never leave the BBQ unattended when there are children and animals around.

Keep a fire extinguisher nearby

Ensure you have a full fire extinguisher that meets current standards within reach, and know how to use it. If a fire hazard occurs, and you're not sure how to use it, call 999 immediately.
